About This Spot

Stepping into Selden Standard, you’re welcomed by a warm, bustling energy that feels both effortlessly modern and deeply rooted in Detroit’s vibrant spirit. The open kitchen hums with life, where the flicker of the grill casts a cozy glow, inviting guests to savor every moment in a lively yet approachable setting. It’s the kind of place where time slows just enough to appreciate the thoughtful balance of flavors and the quiet camaraderie shared over small plates meant for sharing and discovery.

The pace here encourages connection—to the food, the people you’re with, and the city itself. Whether at the bar sampling one of their uniquely crafted cocktails or nestled at a table surrounded by the cheerful clinking of glasses, there’s a sense of intimacy wrapped in community. The air carries a delicate mix of aromas—from smoky lamb ribs to fresh roasted vegetables—that spark curiosity and invite conversation about each dish’s unfolding story.

Selden Standard’s menu resonates like a seasonal narrative, where each plate is a chapter that celebrates vibrant, New American ingredients with a creative edge. The joy lies in the shared experience: from savory bites like tender duck rillette paired with a bright pineapple mostarda, to the surprising richness of squid ink orecchiette. Even the vegetables—roasted Brussels sprouts, earthy mushrooms, and crisp broccoli—stand with just as much presence and care as the meat and seafood. Every dish feels intentional, layered, and designed to be enjoyed in good company.

The wine selection and inventive cocktails complement the menu beautifully, enhancing the exploration rather than overwhelming it. There’s a genuine feeling that the team behind Selden Standard has crafted a thoughtful, dynamic experience where each visit offers something fresh—whether it’s a new seasonal twist or a comforting classic revisited with flair. It’s no surprise that guests often leave looking forward to their next visit, already imagining the next shared meal beneath the warm lights and lively hum of this neighborhood treasure.

Expensive, but worth it. Unique cocktails and seasonal dishes. Everything was served individually in sharable portions, so we were able to make our own dining experience. Our server, Leah was extremely helpful, both with suggestions and with the order that our food came.

We had an excellent dinner at Selden Standard on our weekend getaway to Detroit. The food was excellent, creative, and original, the drinks exceptional, and the service excellent. A fun, busy atmosphere. Really enjoyed our dinner there and are eager to come back to Detroit to try again.

I enjoyed my visit there on my own. I ordered the roasted cauliflower and the lamb bolognese and I was pretty full’ they were both delicious! I liked my drink a lot! It’s like an old fashioned with hint of cocoa in it.I liked it a lot! Follow me on instagram for more good recommendations! @leylaleeeeeeee

This place was hands down the best dining experience Ive had this year !!!!!! Chef gage made me feel at home and really made sure my meal was exceptional! It was a cold day so we sat next to the grill which was blazing and a great vibe . Every dish was delicious! They were small so I do recommend getting multiple plates . I definitely will be back in the future!!

We chose Selden Standard to celebrate my husband’s birthday and it was a wonderful experience. We tried the roasted cauliflower, beef tartare and the pan-roasted half chicken. Everything tasted great and was well balanced. The pavlova for dessert was light and delicious a perfect way to end the meal. Overall all the food was excellent and it made the birthday celebration even more special. Would definitely recommend!

Selden always has the best flavor combinations. A lot of Fennel-flavored items on the menu (which I’m not typically a fan of), but there were plenty of other delicious options. The restaurant typically recommends 2-3 dishes per person in a family sharing style, and we ordered the Mushrooms, Vegetable Carpaccio, Cauliflower, Shrimp&Grits, and Beef Tagliatelle.

Food was great, we shared 6 plates and 2 desserts and there wasn't anything anyone disliked. Favorites were the beef tartare, pork, and crostata with hazelnut gelato. The roast chicken was really good, but a little small for being a half chicken. We liked the meat dishes the best, but it would be good for vegetarians too as the veggie dishes are good on their own, not just as side dishes. Wine options are great and reasonably priced by restaurant standards. It's a bit noisy with music playing and mostly hard surfaces. They're really good with food allergies, verifying whether each plate that comes out has any allergens you told them about.

Went here to celebrate our anniversary! We were hungry so ordered most of the recommended plates. Pasta dishes were phenomenal but the ribeye could’ve been better. Rigatoni was my favorite with some crunchy flakes that added texture. Really pricey but highly recommend this place!
